Their First Trail Ride Starts Here
For children ages 4-7, one of our guides will lead their horse "pony" them for the entire trail ride. They get to ride right alongside the group while their guide takes care of leading their horse.
New to riding? We recommend our 45 minute trail ride for little riders. It's the perfect amount of time for young children to experience a ride, meet their horse and enjoy their first horseback riding adventure without becoming tired or overwhelmed.
Lexus, Slice, April and Rooster are some of our trusted go-to horses for our youngest riders, and we'll choose the best match for your child on the day of their ride.

Trail Ride FAQ's
Do I need horseback riding experience? No experience needed! Our trail rides are designed for first-time riders through experienced riders. We'll match you with a horse that suits your comfort and experience level, help you get settled in the saddle, and our friendly guides will be with you along the way.
Are helmets provided? Yes! Helmets are provided and required for all riders. We'll help make sure your helmet fits properly before you head out on the trail.
When should I arrive? Please arrive for the time of your booking. You will meet your guide at the big barn located at the back of the property to get checked in, complete waivers, fit helmets and introduce you to your horse.
What ages can ride? Children can start trail riding with us at the age of 4! Riders ages 4-7 are led "ponied" by one of our guides for the entire trail ride, so they can simply relax and enjoy the adventure. Riders 8+ can steer on their own horse, with our guides there to help along the way. Nervous older riders can also be led when needed.
What should I wear? Come dressed comfortably for the weather and wear closed-toe footwear that stays securely on your feet. Long pants are recommended. Since we ride though real ranch trail, clothes and shoes that you don't mind getting a little dusty or muddy are always a good idea.
Can I choose my horse? We carefully match each rider with a horse based on experience, size, comfort level and riding ability. Have a favourite Shelby Ranch horse? Let us know! We can't always guarantee a particular horse, but we'll do our best when they're a good match for you.
What horses do younger children ride? Our youngest riders are paired with some of our most trusted trail horses. Lexus, Slice April and Rooster are some of the go -to choices for little riders because of their experience and suitability for the job. For children ages 4-7, their horse is also led "ponied" by one of our guides for the entire trail ride. We choose each horse based on the individual child, so parents can relax while their little rider gets to experience the ride alongside everyone else. Their first trail ride is a pretty big deal and we want it to feel that way.
What happens if it rains or snows? A little rain doesn't stop a trail riding adventure! Trail rides run rain, snow or shine, so dress for the weather. If conditions become unsafe due to heavy rain, thunderstorms or other severe weather, we'll contact you about your booking.
What if I'm nervous about riding? That's completely okay; lots of our riders are! You don't have to be fearless to enjoy a trail ride. Our guides will take the time to help you feel comfortable, introduce you to your horse and answer any questions before we head out. We'll match you with a horse suited to your comfort and experience level, and our guides stay with you throughout the ride. If you need a little extra reassurance along the way, just tell us. We want you to leave the ranch feeling proud that you did it.
How fast do we go on the trail? Our group trail rides are walking rides, making them a relaxed and enjoyable experience for beginners, families and younger riders. Looking for a little more? Private trail rides may include opportunities to jog, lope when trail conditions allow and once your guide is comfortable with your riding ability and control of your horse. This makes the private ride a great choice for experienced riders who are looking for a more personalized horseback riding experience.
Is there a weight or height limit for horseback riding? We have horses of different sizes and builds, which allows us to accommodate a wide range of riders. If you are 240lbs+ or 6ft+ tall, please make a note when booking. This simply helps our team plan ahead and have an appropriately sized horse ready for you. We take care in matching every guest with a horse based on height, build, experience and comfort level so both horse and rider can have a safe, comfortable and enjoyable ride.
